THE GOOD NEWS -- THE BAD NEWS
FIRST, THE GOOD NEWS...
CONGRATULATIONS! You beat the Union Bosses. You beat Collective Bargaining--it's dead this session. You did the impossible. This was the first time the public, the business community and small towns have gotten together on an issue. Even the Albuquerque Chamber of Commerce and the Association of Commerce and Industry Boards voted to work against the Collective Bargaining Bill. Hallelujah! It was a miracle. Through your efforts we won! The State won. We beat Collective Bargaining.
NOW, THE BAD NEWS...
Two new Democrat tax bills (Senate Bills 315 and 591) passed last night . It shafts small New Mexico businesses, the public in general and local governments the worst way possible. I am calling the bills the "Little People Tax Package" because it hurts small business people. Governor King's Democrat majority (who claim to champion the little people) passed the "Little People's Tax Package."
Here's how the bills shaft you "little guys." A $5.00 tax is placed on each nontaxable certificate. This means the retailer will have to pay $5.00 to the State for each New Mexico wholesaler he buys from. Retailers will buy from fewer wholesalers. The small Ma and Pa Store buys from many suppliers, which will now cost $5.00 per wholesaler. Walmart, Sears, Penney's, etc. buy from their own out-of-state wholesaler. Who gets the shaft? New Mexico's little wholesalers and smaller retailers. The smart little retailer will make many trips out of state to buy and we will all lose. If you are thinking about going into the wholesale business, go to Texas. At least it won't cost your new customers $5.00 just to buy a sample order from you.
Ain't it great---this is the Democrat plan for Economic Development. The bill raises $5,000,000 to help pay proposed increases for state employees.
This isn't all the bad news. Governor King's Democrat majority also put through $20,000,000 in new taxes on purchases by governmental bodies. We made history with this. New Mexico is the only state in the union with this tax. Your cities, your county, and even your state government will pay 5% tax on purchases. The 5% tax will be passed onto New Mexicans, with lower income people paying a higher percentage of their income. So the little guys got shafted the hardest and government services will be cut because of the increased expense. On down the road, local government will raise taxes to keep these services in place.
Also Governor King's Democrat majority put a new state tax of 5% on sewage and water bills to raise $3,500,000 that does the same thing as the tax on sales to government--it puts the hurt on the little people the most.
Governor King's Democrat majority placed an income tax on income from municipal government bonds. These bonds are usually bought by retired people to help with living expenses which Social Security does not cover. (This type of tax has never been used in New Mexico.) I've had calls from retired people who tell me this tax alone will make them leave the state and move to Texas or Utah. New Mexico will lose good citizens who have been thrifty and wise to save for their old age. These bills give the state $6,000,000 in taxes and take money from good, thrifty citizens. This is the way the Democrat majority thanks its good citizens who have saved money for their old age. All this money goes for more government or pay raises for government employees. Ain't we lucky?
BUT THERE IS HOPE...
If you're not packing to leave the state, do something now. We beat Collective Bargaining. We can beat SB-315, the anti-business, the anti-small people and anti-retired people tax.
We must alert the entire state today! Get your Chamber of Commerce, get business groups, get everyone to call Governor King. We only have TWO DAYS. Call special meetings to let your people know what is happening. Because there is an appropriation in the bill, Governor King can veto parts of it.
Governor King is a politician. He wants to be reelected and he wants his relatives to be reelected. HE REACTS TO POLITICAL PRESSURE! Put the pressure on: call--fax--telegraph him. (There's no time to write.) Tell him you don't like the Democrats' tax bill. Explain how those Democrat taxes are hurting your business and your life. Also call House Speaker Raymond Sanchez. He can be quite reasonable if enough votes are involved.
Call, telegram or fax:
Governor Bruce King

Phone: 827-3000 FAX: 827-3026Call, telegram or fax:
Speaker Raymond Sanchez
State Capitol Building

Phone: 986-2782 FAX: 984-6260We still may save our state, our businesses and our retirement money from the liberal Democrats' legislature.
Sincerely,
George Buffett
P.S. In the House, the Republicans are outnumbered 21-49. In the Senate, Republicans are outnumbered 16-26. WE NEED YOUR HELP NOW!
P.P.S. In October, Governor King's lips said, "No New Taxes." If you truly think these (Democrats' revenue enhancement measures) are not new taxes, let me know so I can take your name from my mailing list and send it to Santa Claus.
